Welcome to Structural Materials Science
Cutting-edge structural materials
Based on the fundamentals of microstructure and the strength of structural materials, our team aims to develop scientists with advanced expertise to discuss with world-class top scientists and communication skills to share expertise with others. At Nagoya University, I am teaching "Strength of Materials," "Metallic Materials," "Advanced Process Engineering," and "Mechanics of Materials" for my class through my research background of working at various universities such as Kyushu University, Osaka University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Nagoya University in Japan. I also adopted a research and teaching style at Brown University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (in the USA). We actively collaborate with universities, research institutes, and industries in Japan and abroad. We invite and encourage you to join us in exploring the cutting-edge science of structural materials with our international members.
A variety of values in interdisciplinary activities
Graduate students, who are the eggs of researchers and engineers, are required to have various abilities such as "initiative," "conceptual," "problem-solving," "fundamental knowledge," and "communication.” Of course, different people have different abilities. We hope to develop individuality and promote research while building a relationship of trust as a member.
We encourage our members not only to interact with industry, including partner companies, but also to promote academic exchanges with researchers and students of the same generation at home and abroad, to present their research at domestic academic conferences and international conferences to enhance their expertise, and to participate in social gatherings to improve their social skills. We encourage Japanese students to present their research at international conferences held overseas to acquire English language skills, which are essential for international exchange. We also encourage international students to learn the significance of studying in Japan by speaking not only in English but also in Japanese and to support their career development after their graduation. In particular, we strongly encourage Ph.D. students to stay at universities and research institutes in Japan and abroad. We aim not only to promote academic development through international exchange but also to share different values and foster creativity.
Many of our graduate students have won awards for their presentations at national and international conferences, as well as awards for their papers in academic journals, and are highly regarded both at home and abroad.
Your PhD, what next?
Graduates of the master course are employed by various Japanese companies (as of 2025: Toyota Motor Corporation, Nippon Steel Corporation, JFE Steel Corporation, Kobe Steel, Ltd, UACJ Corporation, JR Tokai Corporation, Chubu Electric Power Grid Corporation, Brother Industries, Ltd, Daikin Industries, Ltd, etc.).In particular, we can strongly support the careers of doctoral students (after PhD) as scientists and engineers, and our graduates are active in universities, companies, and research institutes in Japan and abroad.
